Little steps..

We started when she was learning how to hold the pencil.

We started from how write the number -1

Adding moments, subtracting tiredness, dividing snacks and of course multiplying happinesses

Times skipped through number lines, sums reached the higher values..

Now after almost 3 years, she is handling thousands, about to go through many more thousand steps

The one snack

Its been three years since I first started college. I take a bus to and from college everyday. There was this one stall with my favorite snack on the way back. Every evening I used to see this stall from the bus while coming back. But I couldn’t try it till now, as I was on the bus every time.

Today was the last day of college. I walked to the stall and tried it for the first time. The first bite was marked by a surprising sweetness. The guy used peanuts in it, which was an unusual ingredient in this particular snack. When the old man asked me how it was, I smiled and said that it was indeed good.

Now while I am riding the bus back home for the last time, I feel a sense of containment. One regret less…

Handloom Hangover

Every occasion is just another excuse to flaunt our personal style and make a statement. The fashion industry is therefore always on the outlook for new trends and products. With the demands and rise of sustainable fashion, the Indian handloom industry is a blooming and is here to stay as more and more people are discovering and indulging in its sustainable products. Handloom in India is spreading fast under different Indian handloom brands. The handloom industry does not use electric machinery to weave the products but rather depends on handloom weaving. This not only ensures the survival of handloom weavers and their art but also eliminates the use of excessive power use in the textile industry. The handloom workers are managed under the Indian ministry of textile.

Handloom products are not only easy to carry but also comfortable to wear. The hot south summers only increase the demand of such products. This industry uses only natural raw material such as cotton, silk and jute unlike the artificial fabrics such as polyester, chiffon and rayon. The synthetic fabrics are already taking a toll on the earth. Not only the fabric is uncomfortable but also requires a hefty amount of power throughout the process of production. The initial production process requires a large amount of harmful chemicals and process, resulting in mass pollution of the environment. Even after the final product is sold, we actually dump plastic in our ocean every time we wash our cloths. Tiny strands of synthetic fibers are mixed in the water which ultimately reaches our oceans. Not only the ocean but also the waste products such as the extra materials also find their way into landfills. This is one of the reasons why sarees are perhaps one of the most eco friendly garments out there. Sarees are traditional Indian wear and one can drape it in a number of ways. The long, single piece garment is the perfect product of the handloom wave. Sarees not only ensures less wastage of material and manpower but also flatters the one wearing it. Be it an intricately detailed saree or a simple one, the aesthetic feel is the same. The khadi or handloom material gives the wearer a figure hugging sarees to flaunt all her curves effortlessly. What makes the handloom sarees even more special are the different types of weaves. Weaving patterns such as ikat, Chanderi, Maheswari, Kota Doria, Ilkal, Gadwal, Covai Kora or Jamdani gives the sarees a distinct identity, which is marked by its place of origin. Different state specializes in different handloom sarees, for example jamdani is a specialty of West Bengal. Being from Bengal these sarees are what every woman needs in their wardrobe. You are just one click away from purchasing Bengal handloom sarees online. Online stores like Bindi, act as mediator for weavers and viewers. From weavers’ wheels to your doorstep, the product is just as easily available and accessible in the global market. Not only small scale online stores but also big online stores such as Amazon and Fipkart ensure the availability of different handloom products in their stores. Number of different handloom products such as kurti, shirts, dresses, bags and even shoes are now a must in an Indian woman’s wardrobe. So this summer, let’s ride on the handloom wave, without diverting from fast fashion.

A Distractive Star

Which one is better?  The Moon or a shooting star?

Being a person who is like a vagabond in the vast world of literature, it is not uncommon for students like us, who are suddenly exposed to the vast beauty of literature, to often drift into the mode of daydreaming. It expands our senses and sharpens our thoughts to some extent.

While looking out of the window one night, my eyes fell on the moon. And as usual, I started to drift off in my daydreaming, or rather, night dreaming mode. Just like a river, our thoughts flow from one to the other in a matter of seconds. The Moon. Its form was a little different from last night.

At that very moment, for the first time in my life, I saw a shooting star. A jolt of excitement ran through my body, to the point I wanted to chase after it. It is a common myth, that if you bet all your chance and wish upon a shooting star at that one single moment, it will come true. However, even before I could make up my mind, it disappeared, as suddenly it appeared. Seeing its tail disappearing in the night sky, a lonely confusion settled upon my senses. It felt as if you are waking from a trance and all the excitement and the happiness you just experienced was a fleeting dream. You surely cannot hold on to a shooting star. That is an unreal and unreachable dream. It takes us by a little surprise, that even after knowing this, the heart deceives the mind and we put in all our chances in that one moment of fleeting happiness.

By this time, my eyes focused once again on the Moon. It is almost as if she was all smiles and my frantic emotions were slowing down by her calm presence. At that moment, I was grateful to her presence. It is as if I have always taken her presence for granted, because she is always there. She looked upon us, silently witnessing all our moods, even the ones we try hard not to show any fellow human being. On her part, she changed her form routinely as if to accommodate with our lives and show that life goes on. How I have always overlooked her presence while other… attractive things attracted us only to feel her presence in the absence of the attractive elements of life.

Therefore, to me, I found an everlasting and newfound beauty in my moon. Unlike the sun, she does not possess a blinding brightness. The sun may be brighter, the shooting star may possess an unimaginable and unreal beauty, but to me nothing can compare to the gentle warmth and light of the moon. She lays low, watches over us silently, and watches over us silently. In every human life, there are attractions and distractions. Every now and then, a shooting star will pass you, leaving behind a fleeting lingering feeling. Even if they give you the strength to go on can at that point of time, do not give in to them completely. Because of them, do not fail to see and recognize the moon in your life. It may be silent, but it is always there, selflessly giving you warmth and just enough light to illuminate your path ahead. Likewise, the moon will always be the bigger part of your night sky. It is not always the best choice for humans to go on “wishing on a wishing star”.

Introduce Yourself (Example Post)

This is an example post, originally published as part of Blogging University. Enroll in one of our ten programs, and start your blog right.

You’re going to publish a post today. Don’t worry about how your blog looks. Don’t worry if you haven’t given it a name yet, or you’re feeling overwhelmed. Just click the “New Post” button, and tell us why you’re here.

Why do this?

  • Because it gives new readers context. What are you about? Why should they read your blog?
  • Because it will help you focus you own ideas about your blog and what you’d like to do with it.

The post can be short or long, a personal intro to your life or a bloggy mission statement, a manifesto for the future or a simple outline of your the types of things you hope to publish.

To help you get started, here are a few questions:

  • Why are you blogging publicly, rather than keeping a personal journal?
  • What topics do you think you’ll write about?
  • Who would you love to connect with via your blog?
  • If you blog successfully throughout the next year, what would you hope to have accomplished?

You’re not locked into any of this; one of the wonderful things about blogs is how they constantly evolve as we learn, grow, and interact with one another — but it’s good to know where and why you started, and articulating your goals may just give you a few other post ideas.

Can’t think how to get started? Just write the first thing that pops into your head. Anne Lamott, author of a book on writing we love, says that you need to give yourself permission to write a “crappy first draft”. Anne makes a great point — just start writing, and worry about editing it later.

When you’re ready to publish, give your post three to five tags that describe your blog’s focus — writing, photography, fiction, parenting, food, cars, movies, sports, whatever. These tags will help others who care about your topics find you in the Reader. Make sure one of the tags is “zerotohero,” so other new bloggers can find you, too.
